A man arrested in the first round of weekend roadside breath test checkpoints admitted drink-driving charges in court yesterday.

Kieran Evans, 27, admitted driving while over the legal alcohol limit on Paget’s Harbour Road. Evans, from Southampton, was banned from the road for 18 months and fined $1,200.

He was one of five people who appeared in Magistrates’ Court after they were arrested as part of the new crackdown on drink-driving.

The court heard police stopped Evans near Lover’s Lane at about midnight on September 23.

Officers suspected he had been drinking, carried out a field sobriety test and asked him to take a breathalyser test on the spot.

The court heard the device registered 113 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80/100.

A later breath test at Hamilton Police Station, used as evidence, recorded 117 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Four other people also caught at checkpoints denied drink-driving charges and will appear at later hearings.

Roadside sobriety checkpoints will be in force in three parishes again this weekend.

• The Bermuda Police Service will conduct the checks in Pembroke, Devonshire and Paget on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
