Suspected drink-driver in head-on crash

A man suffered serious injuries and another was arrested after a head-on crash between two motorbikes at the weekend, police said yesterday.

Police said one man needed emergency surgery for a serious leg injury and the other was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.

The crash happened on South Road, Warwick, near Warwick Camp at about 4.45pm on Sunday.

A police spokesman said: “Reports are the suspected impaired rider was travelling in an easterly direction along South Road, Warwick, attempting to overtake two taxis while negotiating the series of bends just to the east of Warwick Camp.

“He reportedly entered the opposing lane and as he approached the junction with Camp Road and collided with another bike, which was travelling in the opposite direction.”

Both men were taken by ambulance to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. The BPS spokesman added: “The suspected impaired rider was attended to and subsequently transferred to the Hamilton Police Station, where he was processed and detained pending bail.”

He said that the second rider was still in hospital.
