A 26-year-old Hamilton man was banned from driving for 18 months today for driving under the influence and leading police on a high-speed chase.

Sean Burchall admitted the offence in 2015 and a date was set for trial but he never showed up.

His offence finally caught up with him today when he changed his plea to guilty.

The court heard how Burchall was near Crow Lane roundabout on March 10, 2015, when police officers were in the area doing speed checks.

They clocked Burchall riding east at 66km/h and made attempts to pull him over. However, he led them on a high-speed chase and narrowly avoided crashes as he overtook vehicles dangerously.

Police caught up with him and he was found to have 92mg of alcohol in 100ml of blood. The legal limit is 80ml.

When asked by Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo whether he had anything to say, Burchall said he was turning his life around and now had employment in landscaping.

Mr Tokunbo banned him from driving for 18 months and fined him $1,200.
