The Royal Gazette’s Drive for Change campaign is dedicating the month of March to the issues surrounding impaired driving.
An estimated 75 per cent of road fatalities involve alcohol or drugs and 118 people have died in traffic incidents in the past decade. Scores more are injured – close to 15,000 crashes occurred in that time resulting in 1 in 5 people visiting ER.
Drive for Change is advocating for non-selective road side sobriety testing – as well as speed cameras and graduated licensing, while highlighting the need for guaranteed transport after hours.
The campaign’s Impaired Driving Awareness Month will delve into the causes and solutions of the problem while keeping all aspects of road safety at the fore.
The launch event will hit home and make you think twice about taking that risk. You will hear from leading stakeholders in Bermuda’s road safety community and there will be information on alternatives ways to get home after a night out.
We are hoping to launch the event next Friday from 12pm to 2pm (weather depending) outside of City Hall, Hamilton as the weekend kicks off.
Impaired driving has destroyed so many lives in Bermuda that we all have a stake in joining the cause.
The event details will be posted online and on Facebook at: www.facebook.com/driveforchange
