An elderly man and woman were cut free from a car yesterday after it plunged over an embankment and landed on its roof.

A police spokesman said that the car, driven by a 71-year-old man, hit a wall before it went over the ten-foot drop and landed in the yard of a house with the driver and his woman passenger, also 71, trapped inside.

A Bermuda Fire & Rescue Service spokesman said: “Using the jaws of life, fire crews extricated the patients and assessed them for injuries.”

The crash happened on Stowe Court, Pembroke, at about 9.10am.

The two occupants of the car were taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries is not known.

Nine firefighters and three fire engines were at the scene.

Police said they had launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
