A man who ran a red light while banned from the roads was remanded in custody for sentencing yesterday.

Lionel Roberts, 42, also admitted refusal to take a breath test and riding an unlicensed and uninsured motorbike in the early hours of Sunday.

Magistrates’ Court heard Roberts, of Pembroke, was stopped by police at 1.20am after they saw him ride a motorcycle through a red light at the junction of Reid Street and Spurling Hill in Hamilton.

Roberts denied he had been drinking and refused to take a breath test.

He told officers: “I ain’t taking nothing. That’s not what you stopped me for. You stopped me for a red light. Deal with that.”

The court heard Roberts had already been banned from driving until January 2020 for another alcohol-related traffic offence.

Loxley Rickets, for the prosecution, said a “short sharp shock” might be appropriate.

Roberts apologised to the court and said he thought his ban had already ended.

Magistrate Tyrone Chin remanded Roberts in custody and ordered him to attend the DWI court programme today.

Mr Chin ordered Roberts to come back to court on Thursday for sentence.

The case was one of two alcohol-related traffic offences heard yesterday.

Simon Fennel, a 63-year-old from Leeds, Britain, pleaded guilty to a drink driving charge.

The court heard that at 3.45pm on Sunday, police attended the scene of an auxiliary cycle crash on North Shore Road, east of Blackwatch Pass, in Pembroke.

Officers saw Fennel being treated by emergency medical technicians and suspected he had been drinking.

Fennel admitted he had been drinking earlier that day.

A later breath test showed he had 208 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — more than double the legal limit of 80 milligrams.

Mr Chin banned Fennel from riding all vehicles for 18 months and fined him $1,500.
