Mother given extra time to pay fines

A senior magistrate showed mercy to a single mother of two yesterday and allowed her five months to pay off thousands of dollars in traffic fines.

Preya Leverock, 28, was ordered to pay one of her four fines on the 15th day of every month until her $3,340 debt had been paid off.

Magistrates’ Court heard that Leverock was charged with driving an unlicensed car with no third party insurance when she was stopped on January 2.

She was again charged with driving an unlicensed car on April 18 and was also caught driving at 64km/h on September 12. The speed limit is 35km/h.

Leverock pleaded guilty to the offences yesterday and was fined $340 for speeding, $750 for each unlicensed driving offence and $1,500 for driving without insurance.

The court heard that Leverock, from Hamilton Parish, cared for two young children and was in the process of getting support from the children’s father.

Senior magistrate Juan Wolffe ordered her to pay her speeding charge by October 14 and each unlicensed driving offence on November 15 and December 15.

He also ordered her to pay her $1,500 by February 15.
