A man rode his bike into a police officer and a parked car in an attempt to escape arrest over the weekend.

A police spokesman said the incident happened after the rider tried to evade a police checkpoint.

He added: “A short chase ensued during which the motorcycle rider struck an unoccupied parked vehicle.

“In his continued bid to escape he then struck a police bike before coming into contact with an officer.

“The officer was knocked to the ground and suffered abrasions to his lower extremities and bruising to his ribs.”

The injured officer was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Officers arrested the suspect on suspicion of drink-driving.

The incident happened as officers conducted speed checks on South Road, Southampton about 3pm on Sunday.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Martin Weekes said the safety of its officers was a priority.

Mr Weekes also warned the public against drinking and driving.

He said: “Speeding and driving whilst impaired will be targeted during the current situation and so, if you are going to take advantage of the ability to go out for a drink, we urge you to please do so responsibly for your own safety and that of other road users.

“It is imperative that we allow the staff at KEMH to deal with other urgent cases and patients with Covid-19 symptoms and not overburden them with road traffic accidents caused by speeding or drink-driving.”

Police also attended the scene of a crash involving a motorcycle and a car at the junction of South Road and Harvey Road in Paget on Sunday.

The spokesman said the crash happened at around 8.25pm and the rider of the motorcycle was thrown through the windshield of the car and suffered a serious leg injury, as well as head injuries.

The injured man was taken to the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital for treatment and the woman driver was treated for cuts to her wrist.

The area was cordoned off as police examined the scene, but normal traffic flow resumed about 11.15pm.
