Three men were each fined $1,000 and banned from the roads for 18 months last week after being caught at roadside breath test checkpoints.

Magistrates’ Court heard that all three failed handheld breathalyser tests.

Two failed later tests at Hamilton Police Station and one refused to take a test.

Ki-won Butterfield, 42, pleaded guilty to failing a breath test.

Butterfield, from Warwick, was stopped at a checkpoint in Paget on November 9, last year.

Butterfield told police: “I have had two Elephants.”

A later test showed Butterfield had 225 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — almost three times the legal limit of 80mg/100ml.

Rodney Drummond, from Devonshire, pleaded guilty to failing a breath test after he was pulled over at the Paget checkpoint on the same date.

The court heard that the 41-year-old told police: “I had a couple of drinks.”

A breath test showed he had 105 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood.

Allen Trott, 43, from Hamilton, pleaded guilty to refusing to take a breath test.

Magistrate Juan Wolffe heard that Trott was stopped at a checkpoint on Marsh Folly Road in Paget on November 8.

He admitted to police: “Yes, I had a couple of drinks.”

Trott recorded 221 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath on a handheld breathalyser, but refused to give a further test, the one used in court, at the police station.

He told officers: “Why? I already failed.”

Mr Wolffe ordered all three to pay their fines by March 7.
