A Pembroke man who drove while more than three times the alcohol limit was today fined and banned from the roads.

Lionel Roberts, 41, pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to driving while over the legal limit in Pembroke in the early hours of Saturday.

The court heard that Roberts collided with another motorcyclist as he turned on to Parliament Street, from Front Street, around 2am.

Both riders were taken to hospital and when police officers spoke to Roberts, they noticed that his eyes were bloodshot, his speech was slurred and his breath smelled of alcohol.

Roberts, who had a broken collar bone, told the officers that he’d had a “few” drinks just before getting on his bike.

He later added: “I am not going to lie — I had four beers.”

The other rider suffered bruising and minor cuts to her head and body. Roberts was arrested and taken to Hamilton Police Station.

A breathalyser test showed that he had 274 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood — the legal limit is 80mg.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo fined him $1,200 and banned him from driving for 18 months.
