A 60-year-old man escaped uninjured after driving his car overboard in Southampton.

The incident happened on Middle Road, near Five Star Island, at about 5.20pm on Saturday.

A police spokesman said: “It appears that the car involved was being driven in the eastbound lane of Middle Road when it struck the roadside wooden fence, went down an embankment and ended up overboard, partially submerged, in the vicinity of Five Star Island.

“Apparently the driver, said to be a 60-year-old Paget man, escaped the crash unharmed and was the only person in the vehicle at the time.”

The crash caused “minimal” traffic delays in the area. Police said they would remove it from the water “in due course”.

Anyone with information should call police on 295-0011.
