The organisers of this year’s Made in Bermuda Nights are to provide extra water transport to cut down on the risk of drink-driving.

Jonathan Tankard, chief executive for concert promoters Pink Sand Entertainment, said the series of summer concerts kicks off tonight. He added: “It’s our goal to provide quality entertainment for our guests. In addition to this, we recognise we have to play our part to ensure they do so in a safe, and responsible manner.

“Providing added transportation options for guests takes away the need to drive.”

Mr Tankard said: “Additionally, it will make for a much more comfortable experience at both docks for patrons lining up for the event.”

Organisers only provided a shuttle-boat service from Number 1 Dock in Hamilton to the White’s Island concert venue in the past. But now they will set up an additional low-cost service from Rockaway in Southampton and Darrell’s Wharf in Warwick to and from the venue.

Made in Bermuda Nights, now in its second year, will be held on White’s Island every Thursday from tonight to August 15 from 9pm to midnight.

The events will feature live bands and other home-grown entertainers.

The Royal Gazette’s Drive for Change road safety campaign said it supported the transport move and the campaign logo will be featured on promotional material for the event.

Mr Tankard said that he hoped the provision of extra transport would inspire other organisers to do the same.

He added: “Local event organisers share the goal of providing quality experiences for Bermudians and our visiting guests.

“This common purpose gives us shared responsibility with the Government and other stakeholders in making sure that our patrons can travel to and from our events safely.”

Mr Tankard added: “Transportation represents a significant part of the budget for these events.

“Our transportation partners have worked with us to reduce the costs as best we could in the interest of our patrons … A round trip from Rockaway or Darrell’s Wharf will cost $5 per patron.”

Entertainment for the concerts will include The Wall Street Band, Hindsight and Sheila Smith, featuring One SOULution.

Other performers will include Aswad, Juice Man and Arijahknow Live Wires, The Three Kings, Nadanja Bailey, DJ iBreeze, DJ Rusty G, DJ Chubb, Kreative Innovations and the Gombey Warriors.
