A motorbike rider who ignored police advice to get a taxi was stopped minutes later and found to be more than 3½ times over the legal limit for driving.

Police pulled over Johannes Oosthuizen when they saw him swerve across the road on St John’s Road in Pembroke in the early hours of last Saturday morning, Magistrates’ Court heard on Monday.

Oosthuizen, 30, told the officers: “I had two beers at home.”

They ordered the defendant to park his bike and call for a taxi and left when he did so.

But the same officers saw Oosthuizen riding along Par-la-Ville Road ten minutes later and arrested him on suspicion of driving while impaired.

He was taken to Hamilton Police Station and breath tested.

Oosthuizen recorded 289 milligrams of alcohol in 80 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80mg/100ml.

Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo banned Oosthuizen from driving for a year and fined him $1,200.
